Bathroom questions
How do I make a bathroom safe for later years without it looking like a hospital?
Most of what makes a bathroom safe later is invisible today: wood inside the walls, a flatter shower entry, a valve you can reach. The visible parts can look like any other good bathroom.

Do these now, while the walls are open
- Blocking for grab bars. A grab bar has to be anchored into solid blocking or framing, not into drywall anchors. Adding 2x blocking between studs during a remodel is cheap compared to opening tile later. Ask for photos of the blocking before the walls close, so you know where a bar can go in ten years.
- A low curb or no curb. Stepping over a tall shower curb is one of the first things that gets hard. A low curb, or a curbless entry, takes planning in the floor framing and the slope. See Curbless shower for what that involves.
- A handheld shower on a slide bar. It works for standing and sitting, and the bar can be set for different heights. It needs blocking behind it too.
- Valve placement. Put the shower valve where you can reach it from outside the spray and from a seated position. More on that in Shower valve types.
- A bench or a spot for one. A built-in bench is part of the tile work. If you would rather wait, plan the space and the blocking for a fold-down seat.

Choices that look ordinary and help later
| Feature | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Toilet | What to look forComfort height, about 17 to 19 inches to the seat |
| Floor tile | What to look forA slip-resistant surface, smaller tiles in the shower for more grout lines |
| Faucets and valve | What to look forLever handles instead of knobs |
| Lighting | What to look forEven overhead light plus a low night light |
| Door | What to look forA wider door, or a pocket door that does not swing into the room |
None of these say "medical" when you walk in. A comfort-height toilet is now a standard option. Lever handles are common on most fixture lines. A night light can be a small LED under the vanity on a switch or a sensor.
What can wait
- The grab bars themselves. With blocking in place, a bar can be added later. The only work in the tile is drilling the mounting holes.
- A fold-down seat. Same logic: blocking now, seat later.
- Raised outlets or extra switches, if the wiring path is planned now.
What to know about the numbers
ADA dimensions, such as grab bar heights of 33 to 36 inches, are written for public buildings. In a private home they are a useful reference, not a requirement. I use them as a starting point and adjust to the people who live there. The California code still applies: at least 15 inches from the toilet centerline to a side wall and 24 inches of clear space in front, and every bathroom receptacle on GFCI protection.
A wider door is the one change here that can be expensive, because it may mean reframing the opening. I tell you during the site visit whether your wall allows it.
If you are planning for a specific person or condition, an occupational therapist can give advice I cannot. I can build what they recommend into the estimate.
Do I need a curbless shower to age in place?
Not always. A low curb is often enough and is simpler to build. A curbless shower makes sense when a wheelchair or walker may be part of the plan, and it needs more work in the floor.
How much does blocking add to the cost?
Very little compared to the rest of the remodel, because the walls are already open. It should be written into the estimate so you can see where it goes.
